My Thoughts on Nintendo E3 2012 Press Conference

Miyamoto has a little bit where he's in his dressing room and they are calling him to stage and the Pikmin are running all over the place.  He then walks to the stage at E3 and Nintendo's Press Conference is about to begin!

Bill Trinen, Director of Product Marketing hits the stage to translate Japanese to English.  Bill (through Miyamoto) goes on to talk about the new console Wii U.  How they thought about a small portable device with a screen that will replace the TV (to an extent).  Then they go to show some game play from Pikmin 3.

Hitting the stage next is Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO of Nintendo of America, Inc.  Great quote that Reggie says is, "It's all about the games."  That is great, but we shall see.

Reggie talks a bit about the Wii U and how it'll have Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant, YouTube, and Netflix.  Well it's about time.  I already have Netflix on our Wii so the news is just okay.  Then he talks about the controller and how it'll revolutionize game play and your living room experience.

Reggie goes onto to show a quick view of the Wii U Controller and then launches into the new Mii Universe which looks at this point underwhelming (for me).  Now it's onto New Super Mario Bros. U!  Wow!  While watching the short video I was transported to my youth and reliving Mario Bros.  all over again.  How Nintendo, how did you make this time machine?!?  Tell me!

Reggie show some Batman: Arkham City Harley Quinn back and forth dialogue and Harley introduces Martin Tremblay, President of Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment who goes on to show a short teaser of Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition for the Wii U.  Then out comes Reid Schneider, VP, Production, WB Games Montreal comes out a shows a series of clip that show how the Wii U Controller makes the Batman experience "the best it's ever been" and the use of touchscreen on things is pretty cool.  I am sure the game will sell well even though it's been out on PS3 and Xbox 360 for a bit now.

Martin comes back to stage to talk about Scribblenauts and then introduces Jeremiah Slaczka, CEO/Creative Director, 5th Cell to talk more about the game.  If you're curious Scribblenauts is actually pretty fun, I've only played the first one on the DS a few years ago and it was great.  The only game that I know of where you can type in Cthulhu and boom, there "he" is all tentacle-y and such.  Nice.

Jeremiah talks a few seconds about the Scribblenauts franchise and then introduces us to the new game, Scribblenauts Unlimited for the Wii U.  After watching this I must say the game looks really fun and I could get lost in it for quite a while.

Reggie comes back onstage and talk about what else is coming out.  We get a video montage with the following games and companies (card is subject to change, natch'):

Darksider II (THQ)
Mass Effect 3 (EA)
Tank! Tank! Tank! (NAMCO BANDAI Games, Inc.)
Tekken Tag Tournament  2 (NAMCO BANDAI Games, Inc.)
Trine 2: Director's Cut (Frozenbyte Oy)
Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge (Nintendo)
Aliens: Colonial Marines (SEGA of America)

After the video montage, Reggie talks about how Fitness and Rhythm games came into their own.  He then talks about how 43 Million people purchased the Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus and now a new peripheral the Wii Fit U!  Let's take a look.

Reggie then talk about Music Rhythm games and introduces Sing (Working Title)

The crowd was dead on this title.  Ouch

Reggie begins talking about the Nintendo 3DS and introduces Scott Moffitt, Exec VP, Sales and Marketing, Nintendo of America Inc.

Scott then talks about 3 specific 3DS titles.  He then goes into some AAA titles:

New Super Mario Bros. 2
Paper Mario Sticker Star
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

You can check out more 3DS games coming out at: Nintendo 3DS Third party titles

Here are some third party announced titles coming out for the 3DS:

Castlevania: Lords of Shadows - Mirror of Fate (Konami Digital Entertainment)
Disney Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion (Disney Interactive Studios)
Scribblenauts Unlimited (Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment)
KINGDOM HEARTS 3D: Dream Drop Distance (Square Enix, Inc.)

Reggie hits the stage again and talks about LEGO City Undercover coming to Wii U.  It's an open world game with Lego blocks, if you're into that sort of thing.  I've dabbled a bit in Star Wars Lego games a bit but don't tell anyone.  Here's the trailer to distract you from what I said:

After some decent applause from the crowd Reggie hits the stage again and begins talking about how Ubisoft has embraced the Wii U.

Reggie introduces Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft.    Yves talks about how innovated the Wii U is and it's truly revoluationary in game play and socially as well.  Yves leaves the stage and Xaviar Poix, Managing Director, Ubisoft French Studio, hits the stage to demo some upcoming Ubisoft games for the Wii U

Up first is Just Dance 4.  You as a independent participant can select dance moves for up to 4 people to perform.  That is evil.  Not a game for me but I am sure some will like it.

Now a game for the hardcore, Zombi U and man, does it look sweet.  That might be a deciding factor in what console I buy next (eventually, if any, I'm waiting until the consoles have been out a while and see what kinks are worked out, ya know.  I'll be patience Pete or Paul or Phillip, whatever.  Feast your mortal eyes on this:

This game got the largest crowd reaction so far out of the Press Conference.

Another video montage is up with the following games coming from Ubisoft:

Assassin's Creed III
RabbidsLand
Your Shape: Fitness Evolved 2013
Rayman Legends
Sports Connection
Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth

Reggie then begins talking about Nintendo Land, a virtual theme park made up of twelve different Nintendo-specific lands (only 5 were playable at E3).  To elaborate further Reggie welcomes to the stage Katsuya Eguchi and Jonathan Yeckley, the Wii U Software Developer Producer, Nintendo Co. Ltd, and Treehouse, respectfully.

Katsuya talks about (with Jonathan translating) some of the lands that people will see, here's three the five that they announced:

Legend of Zelda: Battle Quest
Animal Crossing: Sweet Day
Luigi's Ghost Mansion: Haunting Hijinks

Now I believe those three are multiplayer and these are single player:

Donkey Kong's Crash Course
Takamaru's Ninja Castle

Katsuya then demos Luigi's Ghost Mansion.

After the demo, Reggie hits the stage again to hit over previous points about the Wii U and that wraps it up for the Nintendo E3 2012 Press Conference.

I was originally going to give Nintendo a C grade, but Zombi U alone bumps it up to a B and the presentation throughout the show was solid, so all in all I'm giving Nintendo a B+/A-.  Solid, solid showing and there actually was a few games that I really want to try out now.

Did you like the Nintendo Press Conference?  Hated it?  Sound off below!
