So I thought originally this would be a one time post, like a cultural sort of aspect about disturbing horror films that I've viewed over the years, but what the hell... Maybe I can make it into a series or whatnot.
I'm going to start this off with a film I'm actually watching as I write this. There are not too many films that make me turn the volume down or avert my eyes from the screen but The Art of the Devil III is one of those films. I admit I haven't watched the first two and now I don't know if I will. If those are as brutal as this one I might skip them. And to be fair I have watched horror films of all kinds, from shockumentaries to zombies, vampires to Troma, hours upon hours of gore filled visions since I was about 13 or so on. I sneaked watching the Howling and Jaws when I was probably too young to view them, and well, the shark phobia stuck... and hard. Still to this day I have trouble watching shark-breaching-water scenes w/ teeth. Man that creeps me out just thinking about it. The Howling only affected me that night I watched it because we lived right off the desert and the coyotes were howling and as an eight year old it freaked me out.
The Art of the Devil III is about a family that uses black magic to bring their dead wife and mother back but something goes wrong and then things get brutal and disturbing. So disturbing in fact I don't know if I should write about it or direct your attention to IMDB and a trailer. I will say this, it brings to the table things I haven't seen before gore-wise. Maybe the first two movies touched upon this but once again I haven't seen them. This film also raises the ceiling on what I've seen in a horror film again and again, and I've seen a lot of horror film special effects. Not too shabby for a film that is already four years old.
Please be advised this is NSFW (Not Safe for Work)! You've been warned. Twice now, also this is not for the squeamish or easily offended by gore and violence. Not for anyone under the age of 18. I mean it.
